A number of recent articles associate digital health records with clinician burnout. We've previously noted that the obvious observations are important but possibly more important is the "backstory" about contextual drivers. An "Arch Collaborative", involving many organizations like ours, has studied the concerns with a view to finding solutions.
An upcoming webinar will explore the insights and data gathered through the Arch Collaborative initiative that bring greater clarity to why electronic record usability continues to frustrate and what can be done to reduce burnout.

Connect Care Training and Physician Compensation
Physician training emails and scheduling surveys have gone out to almost 2,000 physicians touched by the Wave 1 Connect Care launch. This makes training and competency requirements real and immediate.
Connect Care clinical informaticians may be drawn into more conversations about why physicians do not receive financial compensation for time spent on training activities. It is important that we understand and consistently message the rationale for Connect Care's physician resourcing strategy. Honest Conversations - Please Contribute
Many among the Connect Care clinician user community are worried about harms associated with digital health records; this on top of general anxiety about upcoming transitions.
We have started a "Honest Conversations" series in the general-interest blog at bytes.connect-care.ca. It would be great if members of our medical informatics community could help by suggesting topics, helping to craft short messages and, especially, adding comments to published postings. These could encourage others to also share reflections and so promote "conversation".

Twitter Parodies Vent Physician EHR Frustrations

Though tongue-in-cheek, the tweet-storm is important for medical information lead reflection. The tweets resonate with physician concerns about increased screen time at the expense of patient and personal time.
We recognize that a wide range of pressures affect informational burdens, and frustrations, among our American colleagues. We have committed to digital information management strategies -- including shared notes, charting by exception, lean order-sets, and speech recognition -- that could free up clinician time for what matters most. We also recognize that EHR harms-reduction demands radical change from typical paper-based workflows. Change management, not computer technology, is our challenge.

Acknowledging Fears and Leveraging Hopes
Many in the Connect Care informatics community have noted increased anticipatory anxiety among clinician colleagues as Wave 1 launch nears. The timing is unfortunate, as there has been a crescendo of negativity in the American press about Electronic Health Records.
We've always believed it best to acknowledge clinician fears; indeed to study, categorize and validate those fears. This has helped us design Connect Care with harms reduction in mind. This also builds credibility as we surface a world of positive benefits associated with CIS use... and so promote adoption keyed to clinician hopes.
'Fears and Hopes' were the theme of a recent presentation at an Edmonton Zone wave 1 launch event. Key sections were recorded and streamed in a series of bytes.connect-care.ca postings.
